Tomatoes come from the plant Solanum lycopersium. The species began in Mexico, but spread worldwide once the Spanish colonized America. By scientific classifications, the tomato is a fruit, and is actually considered a berry. (I still advise against adding it to a fruit salad). The stem and leaves of the plant contain small amounts of tomatine and solanine, both of which are toxic.[x]
